It was a packed house for last night’s board meeting, as the WSA Board of Directors recognized London Davis, the district-wide winner of the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District’s annual middle school essay contest. A seventh grader at Harvester Christian Academy, London, won the top prize for her essay at a reception at the State Capitol on December 14. Representing Douglas County, Davis was among 14 regional winners celebrated at the reception before announcing the district-wide winner.

“I urge everyone to check it out and give it a read. It’s a really good essay,” said WSA Executive Director Gil Shearouse.

With her win, Davis won a $500 prize, $100 as a regional winner, and an additional $400 as a district-wide winner. The contest challenges students to think critically about our region’s water resources and raises awareness for the conservation and preservation of water quality in metro Atlanta. More than 700 students explored the river basins in their communities, highlighting their historical, cultural, and geographical significance.

Established by the Georgia legislature in 2001, the Metro Water District relies on stewardship, science, and data to develop and implement one of the country’s most comprehensive water management programs. The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District collaborates with 96 cities and 15 counties to conserve and protect our region’s vital yet limited water resources. WSA Executive Director Gil Shearouse serves on its board of directors as the Douglas County designee.

“This is a great opportunity not only for you but for Douglas County,” said WSA Board Chairman Peggy Baugh.
